In the entire universe, the human life is the most precious and sacred. It is the rarest and the noblest. The absolute humanness is pure, unsullied and beyond any attributes. Only a human being can think, understand, decide and accomplish a thing and act as no other living being can. Only man can invent, explore and progress in new areas. Therefore, human life is called the ‘Life of action’ and other lives are only epicure (voluptuous).
As a society, we have progressed a lot and continue to move ahead in different areas relating to science, technology and commerce. Today people have more resources, power and wealth at their disposal than ever before but the use or misuse of available resources depends upon the attitude/thinking of the user. The availability of so much resources can be harmful, if misapplied.
Today, we are passing through a period of serious cultural turmoil & void of values. Most of the people today are living in their own world of pleasure so much it looks that morality and ethics have disappeared from their lives. Today most of the people have fallen victims to negative mental tendencies/thoughts like anger, passion, pride, greed, envy, ego, impatience, infatuation. Youths of today want to go fast at a bullet speed leaving others behind. They want to make quick money so some times even, they don’t hesitate to adopt unethical methods and many a time they take to frauds and crimes. The unethical ways have multiplied whereas values and principles have decayed. The sacred human life is polluted by negative thoughts and evil desires, which have become a part and parcel of their attitude. The downfall of human values in the society is the result of non-existence of the human values in the subconscious of today’s generation.
Although man has made commendable advancement in scientific, economic and educational fields but has become selfish, greedy and aggressive. He become
self centered and find himself cut off from the society. He tried to find solace in the materialism but not getting succeed. Although people feel the presence of these negative mental tendencies in their day-to-day life but they do not aware when and how they fallen victim of these negative tendencies. They are not able to find the solution. They are in a state of constant conflict which leads them to stress and anguish.
Value system, today has eroded and man finds himself at cross roads. He is caught in a dilemma. The binary forces of good and evil, perennially, pull him apart and the conflict between his personal desires & ambitions and values leave him with a feeling of guilt whereas a person who grows up in a value based environment will be free from conflicts and pangs of conscience.
This is a matter of great concern and it needs to be attended to immediately to find an appropriate solution. If it is allowed to go on like this, the time is not far when sincerity, authenticity, ethics, integrity, responsibility, morality etc will vanish from the society. But If human values such as compassion, love, tolerance, fortitude, equality, serenity, contentment, truthfulness, modesty, generosity, self-control, forgiveness, curiosity, selfless-service and self-sacrifice are inculcated in the subconscious of a person during his/her childhood, adherence to these value would become a part of his nature and eventually man would become more valuable and useful not only for himself and his family but also for the society.
If human values are not imbibed by the people during their childhood, they may fall victims to the negative mental tendencies like anger, greed, possessiveness, envy, lust, impatience and as a result they may not come up to their own expectations or the expectations of the society. The negative tendencies may suppress the positive tendencies/human values and may hamper their overall development. It may further cause depression, frustration and tension, which may, sometimes, initiate them into evil practices and crimes. The ultimate result is that the society is deprived of dynamic persons, who could contribute to its development.
THE CHARACTER
The character of a person depends upon the values and mental tendencies existing in his subconscious. If character is a tree, the subconscious is the field, values/ tendencies are like a seed planted in it and the surrounding environment & circumstances are like water/fertilizers for its growth. The values/tendencies are imbibed by a person or built in him mainly during the following four stages :
1. ‘Values/tendencies’ which are in the genes of the child at the time of birth.
2. ‘Values/tendencies’ which he imbibes from his parents and traditions of the families of his mother and father.
3. ‘Values/tendencies’ which he gets from the surrounding environment (parivesh) and from the persons with whom he constantly interacts i.e. family members, relatives, friends, peer, and neighbors. The conduct and behaviour of these persons has significant impact on the child. This is the first stage of character building of a child as at this stage he tries to imitate others around him and follows them blindly.
4. At a later stage of childhood, a child begins to think on his own before he initiates an action. He tries to analyze whatever is spoken, taught or preached and then acts accordingly. He accepts it only if he concurs with it. By the end of teen age, his character building and formation of personality is almost complete and his future actions depend upon his mental makeup and character. It is very difficult to bring about any change in a person after his teenage.
The values/tendencies existing in a child at the time of birth or imbibed later in his subconscious during the above stages may be positive or negative. Sometimes, the negatives become so strong that they suppress the positives. This impedes the development of a person. He becomes unhappy, stressed and frustrated and looks for an escape in undesirable evil activities. The society, in turn, is deprived of a personality person, who could contribute to it. Therefore it is necessary to create situations and provide an environment which inspires him to discard his negative mental tendencies and inspires him to imbibe human values/ positive tendencies.
